Ruthin RFC 8 Pwllheli RFC 26

The game had to be transferred from the first team pitch which was essentially waterlogged to the narrower shorter second team pitch. The pitch was very heavy and muddy but it was credit to Ruthin than the game took place at all.
Given the conditions both teams must be credited for trying to play expansive rugby but errors were inevitable given the appalling conditions. The visitors started the stronger . They crossed the whitewash after only four minutes when right wing Osian Parry Jones latched on to a neat cross kick by fly half Mathew Parry. He added the difficult conversion. It became apparent early on the Ruthin were very much up for the contest and gave no quarter in contact. They gradually game into the game but the well organised Pwllheli defence kept their structure well. Pwllheli's second try came on twenty four minutes. Winning the ball on half way Pwllheli's pack kept the ball tight and made ground to Ruthin's twenty two.  From a ruck they released the ball to the backs.. Fly half Parry saw Ruthin's cover defence had come up too quickly and a deft grubber kick saw left wing Robin Hughes Jones capitalise as he won the race for the touchdown. Once again Parry Jones slotted and excellent conversion to  give Pwllheli a fourteen to nil lead.
Ruthin then staged a tenacious fightback. They cut the deficit by three points via a penalty by their fly half Nathan Jones. Then in the last play of the first period they won a line out ten metres out from the Pwllheli Line and drove their second row Arwyn Davies to score. The conversion attempt missed.
Half time : Ruthin 8 Pwllheli 14.
The third quarter was saw the game ebb and flow . The visitors looked dangerous whenever they had they ball but they had difficulty coping with stout Ruthin defence and the increasingly heavy playing surface. As the half progressed Pwllheli had cleaner faster possession and on twenty minutes they scored a deserved try by back rower Caron Jones . Osian Parry Jones' conversion put  his team thirteen points clear. In the latter stages of the game Pwllheli pounded the home defence but the crucial home try did not come until the thirty sixth minute.  Centre Ianto Parry used his strength to finish off a multi phased movement. The conversion missed.
The well officiated game finished on forty minutes with both sides having given their all.
Pwllhelli have never found matches away to Ruthin easy and today's match was no exception. Though Pwllheli again travelled with a much changed match they thoroughly deserved their try bonus win but were made to fight hard for the win.
This weekend the firsts are away to Llangefni. The Anglesey team always pose Pwllheli problems and the home match against them earlier in the season was a tight affair. Kick off as always is at 2.30. There is no  bus to this match.
The second team have another away fixture but Pwllheli's Youths have a rearranged match on Saturday. They now host Nant Conwy at Bodegroes . This game also kicks off at 2.30.
