Pwllheli 55 v 7 Mold

This North Wales Plate semi-final game was played on a warm afternoon, on a firm pitch and  there was very little wind.

Pwllheli opened at a canter, earning a penalty for offside at a ruck after only four minutes. Osian Parry Jones was successful with his kick placing three points on the scoreboard. Seven  minutes he later managed to outpace the Mold defence to score a try wide out. On resumption of play flanker and club captain Dafydd Anwyl broke a tackle in mid field and completed his run between the posts, Jones converted. The next try came five minutes later when scrum half Nic Butterworth deceived his opponents with a side step and again ended between the posts for the first of his two tries, Jones converting one of them to give 27-0 on the score board and only 22 minutes on the clock.

There was more determination in the visitors’ play for the next ten minutes and eventually they managed to cross the line for their only try of the afternoon and they were successful with the conversion. In injury time, the home side gained another penalty within kicking distance and Jones converted to give a half time score of 30-7 to the home team.

After the interval, Pwllheli continued to produce the quick and skilful running game in the same vein as in the first half with excellent support play and intelligent  running when required. Again four tries were scored, but Jones opened with yet another penalty after three minutes of play followed by a Kevin Morris try. John Pugh added two, one converted by substitute outside half Alan Roberts, and to complete the scoring and in injury time, Robin Hughes Jones added his name to the list of try scorers.

Next game, it is back to the league with both the senior side playing away at Dolgellau. The Youths have a game against Irish side Navan RFC, Co.Meath, at Bodegroes on Friday night with kick-off scheduled for 7-30 pm.
