PWLLHELI RFC 19 BRO FFESTINIOG RFC 6

Pwllheli travelled to Eirias Park to meet Bro Ffestiniog RFC for the second time in a week. Unfortunately the weather was not kind and the whole match was played in cold, wet and windy conditions. To the credit of the Council groundsmen at Eirias the pitch was in fine condition.

This North Wales Plate Final match was the last fixture of the season for both clubs. With Bro relegated to Division 2 North next year and Pwllheli being the Champion club this season.many thought all Pwllheli had to do w was to turn up to pick the Trophy. Someone clearly forgot to tell Bro. They came out strongly and man marked Pwllheli's dangerous runners to the extent that try scoring chances were few and far between. Bro had done their homework and they game plan of keeping the ball tight and using the boot to turn the Pwllheli defence. With both sides finding the greasy ball hard to manage the game was punctuated by a series of stoppages.Pwllheli struggled to get into their game plan as the weather and Bro's tenacity prevented any pattern to develop.

The first twenty  minutes were an arm  wrestle as players tried to get some forward momentum in to play. On twenty one  minutes Pwllheli managed to get a concerted drive going and their cohesion and momentum saw flanker Ellis Griffith at the rear of a driving maul and touch down for a try. Osian P.Jones added the conversion.  Rather than dampen Bro's spirits the score raised the tempo of their efforts. Time and again their forwards and hefty backline battered at the Pwllheli cover but the Lleyn side's defence was well organised and held firm. Bro got some reward for their efforts and Huw James slotted a neat penalty to reduce Bro's arrears. Bro added a second penalty on forty  two minutes ,again by James, to take the half time score to Pwllheli seven ,Bro six.

The second period mirrored the first . Both sides worked hard and heavy tackles abounded. Pwllheli began to earn more possession and the pressure yielded a succession of penalties. Osian P.Jones added three points to his season's tally with an eleventh minute penalty followed by another on fifteen minutes. Bro did not give up but Pwllheli now had the edge  Their subs refreshed the team's efforts and on  twenty three minutes Jones slotted Pwllheli's third penalty. The coup de grace came in injury time with Jones' fourth penalty kick completing the afternoon's scoring.

The Man of the Match selected by the North Wales Committee was Geraint Owen Parry.

Pwllheli's seniors home grown  teams ended the season strongly. The first XVts won the Championship losing only one league match all season. The North Wales Plate was a pleasing and deserved bonus. The seconds won the inaugural North Wales Seconds League Cup final and came third in the league. Pwllheli Ladies also did well reaching the semi final of the WRU Vase Competition. The players now take some well deserved time off . They next met at the Club's Presentation evening on May 29.

Fortunately for those who enjoy fluid attacking rugby the Second team match against Llangefni in the North Wales Seconds League Cup Final was an exciting contest to the end. Pwllheli edged the match by seventeen to fourteen . The victory was much the doing of coach  and player Euron Jones who has worked tirelessly to keep the seconds on track for much of the season. Both sides played with flair, commitment and passion and the game was an excellent advert for North Wales second team rugby.

Pwllheli Youth play at Eirias Park at the weekend in the North Wales Plate final. Best of luck to the squad and let's hope they finish this highly encouraging season on a high.
