Pwllheli RFC 34 Abergele RFC 13

Given the atrocious conditions it was not until an hour before kick off before the referee declared that the match would go ahead. Though the pitch was heavy the promised gale force winds thankfully did not materialise. It is a testament to the support Pwllheli generate that a sizeable crowd turned up to support their team. Abergele decided to play with the gusty wind at their backs in the first period. They started well and could have gone ahead after they missed a penalty opportunity after only two minutes. Pwllheli responded positively. After only eight minutes a raking touch finder took them into the Abergele twenty two. Winning the line out they set up a rolling maul which drove inexorably towards the opposition try line. The home side's number eight , Tom Billington Parry crossed the line to score. The conversion attempt drifted wide. The well drilled and organised Abergele side took the game to Pwllheli and were rewarded after thirteen minutes with a penalty from their full back Owain Davies. Abergele kept the pressure on Pwllheli and recycled quick ball on Pwllheli's right. A somewhat lobbed pass was however intercepted by Pwllheli centre Deio Brunelli and he did well to race fully eighty metres to score under the posts. Both sets of players tried to play rugby and given the conditions the crowd were treated to a decent display of skillful rugby. Osian P.Jones added the conversion to take the home side to a twelve to three lead. Osian P.Jones added a penalty on twenty seven minutes and they could have extended their lead with two kickable penalties on thirty and forty minutes.Half time came with Pwllheli leading by fifteen points to three. The opening stages of the second period saw Abergele on the attack. They were duly rewarded after seven minutes when Cameron Watson scored a try and Owain Davies added the two points. The motivated home side then gained ground by a series of patient pick up and drives by the pack. They made forty yards before allowing scrum half Robin Hughes Jones to power over for a try. Abergele were not done and they reduced the deficit to twenty points to thirteen with another Owain Davies penalty. The last quarter belonged to Pwllheli. On twenty five minutes Osian Parry Jones took on Abergele's defence in their own twenty two and beat three would be tacklers to score under the posts. The score secured a potentially very valuable try bonus point for the Club.He converted his own try. Pwllheli had a strong bench and one of the changes saw Mathew Hardy come on the pitch in place of Facundo Aguirre. Both he and Manu Acebo return to Argentina this week. The Club wish to thank both for their commitment and contribution to the Club over the last three months. Pwllheli's final score came from second row Huw Williams who had an outstanding Man of the Match display. Jones added the conversion to complete the afternoon's scoring. Players and coaches will be relieved following today's performance. Some of their recent games have been disappointing at best and this match against a good solid team will have laid a few ghosts to rest. Special mention must be made of the referee Aaron Cross of Aberystwyth who epitomised the spirit of the game. The game was not marred by frequent stoppages and the players knew exactly where they stood. Advantage was played whenever possible and both teams benefitted from the referee's attitude and management of the game. Pwllheli Youths lost by 13 - 8 in a tough away match at Denbigh. The scheduled seconds home match against Caernarfon was postponed as Caernarfon could not raise a side. Likewise the Ladies match against Colwyn Bay scheduled for Sunday was postponed as they also were unable to raise a side. Pwllheli have another home match on Saturday when they host Dolgellau at Bodegroes.
