Dolgellau RFC 12 Pwllheli RFC 28

In chilly showery conditions a small and faithful crowd came to support their teams for this important League match. Pwllheli started the better and after only two minutes Pwllheli's backs broke from deep. Centre John Pugh took he ball on before offloading to right wing Robin Hughes Jones. His pace took him clear to touch down. Osian P.Jones added the conversion. Dolgellau settled down and heavy tackles came in from both sides . Dolgellau lost a player following a ruck after ten minutes but they clearly had a strong bench. It was Pwllheli however that scored next. It was a swerving run from John Pugh on fifteen minutes which took him beyond the cover defence for him to dive over wide out. The conversion attempt missed. The next ten minutes was all Dogellau. They used their fired up pack to punch holes in Pwllheli's defence. Their set scrum had the edge on the visitors and after a series of penalties the referee lost patience and awarded a penalty try. He also strangely awarded a yellow card to centre Pugh who was clear of the tackle area at the time. With the match standing at twelve to seven it was all to play for. Pwllheli regrouped and made ground on the left. Their first attempt at a rolling maul was collapsed but they tried  again. This time flanker Chris Studt benefited from a powerful drive as he touched down. The touchline conversion by Osian P.Jones was successful. Pwllheli extended their lead with a long range Jones penalty after thirty six minutes and the half time came with Pwllheli leading by twenty two points to twelve.

Pwllheli were on he front foot right from the kick off in the second period. After only two minutes the lead was extended by another siege gun penalty by Jones. With Pwllheli pressing hard Dolgellau yieleded yet another penalty on twelve minutes when it was Jones again who added the three points. Territorially Pwllheli were now dominating the game but well organised and fierce defence kept Pwllheli at bay. They thought that scrum half Danial Williams had scored following a ruck close to the Dolgellau line. The referee however adjudged a double movement and awarded the home side a penalty. It is a huge credit tom the Dolgellau defence that they kept Pwllheli out and there was no further scoring. The second half ended on exactly forty minutes with Pwllheli camped in the hosts twenty two.

Pwllheli were glad of the hard fought win but may well rue their missing out on a crucial try bonus fourth try.

This Saturday Pwllheli face another tough fixture as they host current Champions Bala ar Bodegroes. The visitors will travel with a point to make and once again the Lleyn side will have to be at their best to maintain their exended league run at Bodegroes. The Clubhouse will be open to all to watch the Wales v France match which kicks off at 5.00.
