PWLLHELI 20 v BRO FFESTINIOG 12

This was a match played in perfect conditions and on a lush well groomed pitch. A good crowd had come to Bodegroes to watch the opening match of the expanded Division 1 North.

Pwllheli's new look side had four players making their first team debuts and there were several new groupings particularly at centre where Butterworth and Hicks teamed up for the first time.

The home side had the better of the opening salvoes and deservedly took the lead with a tenth minute penalty by fly half Osian Parry Jones.

Bro who were very obviously a very different side who played at Bodegroes last year came back using their bulky backs to punch holes in the Pwllheli cover.Their pressure resulted in a try number eight Mark Morris after fourteen minutes. Fly half Lee Aspden added the straightforward conversion which  took them four points clear. Pwllheli's riposte took some time to come but it was worth the wait. Breaking out from their own twenty two nice lines of running took them clear and the finishing touch was by flanker Tom Parry who scored under the posts. Jones added the two points.

The half time came on forty two minutes with Pwllheli leading by ten points to seven.

The second period saw Pwllheli dominate the first twenty minutes. On ten minutes centre Butterworth scored a fine try  and four minutes later captain Dafydd Anwyl scored Pwllheli's third. Both conversions drifted wide. Pwllheli's Achiles Heel then came to the fore. Prop Trenholme received a yellow card for offside at a ruck on twenty minutes. Bro threw everything into the fray. They are a bulky side and forwards and backs attempted to bludgeon themselves over the Pwllheli line. The home defence was superb and they thwarted drive after drive from the visitors. Pwllheli made the job a lot easier for Bro when prop Griffiths was correctly carded on thirty minutes for coming in from the side. Now down to thirteen men it took Bro two minutes for Bro's flanker Rhodri Jones to  score a deserved try but Aspden could not add the conversion.

It was now all Bro but Pwllheli's line held firm. In the last play of the match Bro were awarded a penalty. The kick would have given them the solace of a losing bonus point but the kick drifted wide.A hard lesson for Pwllheli once again . They know they have a lot to work to do as they travel away to Llandudno for their second match.

Pwllheli Youths achieved a hard fought win against visitors Bro. Pwllheli's seconds match was called off as Bro could not raise a side.
