Bro Ffestiniog 0 Pwllheli RFC 63

The weather was ideal for rugby for the match with only a slight breeze running lengthwise up the pitch. Once again Pwllheli bought with them a good number of their staunch supporters.

Pwllheli played with the slope in the first half. Their lighter pack were quicker to the ball and their recycling gave their half backs space to orchestrate the game An early penalty attempt by Pwllheli drifted wide. The Lleyn side attained territorial dominance though Bro's pack competed effectively in the set pieces. With pressure being exerted on Bro a wayward clearance kick on twelve minutes was fielded forty metres out by Pwllheli. They countered and quick inter-passing created space for fullback Danial Glyn to beat the despairing cover to score wide out. Osian Parry Jones slotted the difficult conversion. Four minutes later it was Parry Jones who extended the lead to ten points with a long distance penalty. With both sides putting in some big hits it seemed that defence would rule the day. However on twenty two minutes Bro made the error of giving Pwllheli's scrum half and captain a yard of space. He saw the gap and thrust through for his side's second try. Seven minutes later it ws Butterworth again who benefitted from the searing running which gave him e the opportunity to beat the cover for try number three. The Parry Jones conversion put Pwllheli twenty two nil up with twelve minutes of the half to go. Rather than succumb Bro rallied. They took the game to Pwllheli with the pack and backs combining well to make ground. They held on to possession and drove towards the Pwllheli line. They came close several times but could not break the deadlock. They dominated possession for the rest of the half but they were never incisive enough to pirece the defensive line. Half time came after forty six minutes play with no further score.

The home side conceded several early scores as the found difficulty managing Pwllheli's fluent attacks. They went a further three points down after only four minutes through a Parry Jones long distance penalty. Three minutes later the Lleyn side won line out possession just outside the Bro twenty two. They set up an effective driving maul and made ground before releasing second row Huw Williams. His strength and prowess enabled him to crash through would be defenders to score a try bonus point for his team. Again Osian Parry Jones slotted the conversion. IDLL Jones then brought on three of his powerful bench of Geraint Parry, Elgan Davies and prop Rhys Williams. On nine minutes Bro tried to counter with a chip kick ahead. Sadly for them it fell to Pwllheli's poacher Robin Hughes Jones who gleefully sped through to touch down under the posts. Fly half Kalim Kelemete added the two points to give Pwllheli an unassailable thirty nine point to nil lead. Bro then made changes of their own and continued to attempt to make an impact on the game. Their bulky centres made several probing runs and they twice created overlaps but failed to capitalise on them Whenever Pwllheli had the ball they threatened. Seventeen minutes in Kelemete recognised the cover had drifted too far too quickly and scythed through to score. He added his own conversion. Pwllheli's pack were now make regular inroads and on twenty four minutes Pwllheli's flanker Ifan Owen took advantage of a tiring defence to score a fine individualist try. Kelemete kicked the conversion. Though the Bro side endeavoured they could not prevent two further tries by Butterworth to make it a personal hattrick and fullback Danial Glyn who secured his brace. Neither try was converted. The whistle went after firty one minutes.

Once again the squad demonstrated that the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. There were some strong individual displays but the side are at their most effective when they play as a unit. The score does not reflect the reality that Bro were the stronger side on occasion and Pwllheli's result was as much to do with strong resolute defence as it was with their undoubted attacking flair.

Pwllheli's second fifteen won their third match out of four by winning thirty three points to nineteen away to Bala. The Youths had an excellent away win beating Llangefni by forty six points to nil. Pwllheli face Ruthin at Bodegroes on Saturday. They may have had a poor start to the season but historically games between the two clubs have been tightly contested. Pwllheli expect no less on this occasion and the squad will prepare accordingly.
