Colwyn Bay RFC 13 Pwllheli RFC 66

Contrary to weather predictions Saturday afternoon in Colwyn Bay turned out to be warm if windy. With the pitch in immaculate condition the large travelling support of the Lleyn team looked forward to the contest. With six enforced changes to the team selection was able to give the opportunity to several aspiring youngsters. The home side started well. After only two minutes Pwllheli were caught offside and their excellent fly half Pat Atkinson slotted the kick. From the restart the game ebbed and flowed with Bay using their jumbo pack to make inroads.Set pieces were initially even as were the lines-out with both sides getting quality possession. Pwllheli benefitted from a spilt ball after ten minutes and fly half and captain Nick Butterworth caught the home defence napping as he cut through from thirty metres to score. The kick missed. With Pwllheli being on the wrong side of the whistle the game lacked the continuity on which Pwllheli thrive. Colwyn Bay made ground through a series of forward thrusts and were awarded a penalty on seventeen minutes as Pwllheli were called for lying over the ball. Atkinson's kick was agonisingly close but drifted just wide of the posts. From the restart Pwllheli regained possession and the ball went through six pairs of hands as they opened up the home defence. Supporting number eight Tom Parry was the beneficiary as he scored his side's second try on twenty minutes. Butterworth's conversion took the visitors twelve points to three up. The next ten minutes were eminently forgettable as play became fragmented and there were few coherent passages of play. Colwyn Bay missed a penalty shot after twenty four minutes but Atkinson was successful with another attempt on thirty minutes.Immediately from the restart Pwllheli's fly half John Pugh was the first to the ball and his pace took him past four would be tacklers to score wide out on the left. The wide angled conversion was successfully kicked by captain Butterworth. On thirty seven minutes a Pwllheli player was yellow carded under the new laws as his boot was said to be close to an opposition player as he lay on the ground. The half finished after exactly forty minutes play. It took Pwllheli thirty seconds from the second half kick off to earn their try bonus point as centre Deio Brunelli raced through from the kick off to score his team's fourth try. Two minutes later Pwllheli's pace outstripped the home cover as put Tom Parry in for his second try. Butterworth's conversion took the score to thirty eight to six to Pwllheli. On twelve minutes Colwyn Bay were surprisingly awarded a scrum penalty. Their tap and go saw David Hocknell crash over under the posts Pat Atkinson added the straightforward kick. Pwllheli then made a block substitution taking four players off to be replaced with fresh legs. Pwllheli were now dominant in most areas of play. Their inter-passing was sometimes sublime. Nineteen minutes in Colwyn Bay had a player yellow carded for a high tackle as Pwllheli were through and within twenty metres of the try line. They maintained their focus and within a minute fullback Danial Williams beat the cover to touch down. Butterworth converted. Three minutes later a flagging home side saw scrum half Butterworth shrug off two would be tacklers to score. He again added the conversion. The last ten minutes saw the game punctuated by many stoppages and the pace of the game seemed to slow down as a result. Pwllheli added a fine blindside try for substitute hooker Alan Roberts and in virtually the last move of the game Robin HughesJones scored Pwllheli's tenth try. Butterworth added both conversions. Their ten tries and eight conversions see Pwllheli extend their lead at the top of Division One North to four points. However gratifying the current situation they are wholly aware that so much can happen in the coming months and they will remain pragmatic and will continue to pay attention to detail and ensure the effort is still put during training. Despite the victory Pwllheli had some serious concerns as to some aspects of the game. They were confused as to the interpretation of some of the new laws and the constant stoppages took away from the momentum of the game. Pwllheli kept their shape and discipline and this is a credit to all involved. On Saturday Pwllheli face a stern test against visitors Bala. Though Bala surprisingly lost at home last week Pwllheli are all too aware of the calibre of the opposition. Both Bala and Pwllheli were missing key players last week so it should be some game. Pwllheli's seconds are also home as they host Dolgellau in only their second game of the season. Pwllheli Youths have an away league fixture against Bala.
